Retreat & Revive: Local Escapes

Recently my staff and I
visited Amish Country and
I felt myself quickly relax as we began winding our
way through 76 miles of idyllic byways, surrounded
by manicured farms and horse-drawn buggies.

Although Amish Country can be an easy day trip from central Ohio, there is so much to see and do that you will want to plan to stay longer.  AAA can help you do that for less. See AAA’s Amish Country packages and exclusive benefits listed at the left. Be sure to talk to a AAA travel professional before you book your trip, as there are many pockets of charm that you may miss if you are not familiar with the area.

Be sure to bring your wallet, and get ready to shop for quality furniture, hand-made quilts, unique crafts, and delicious cheese and baked goods. The Amish own many businesses in the towns of Berlin, Walnut Creek, Millersburg, Charm & Winesburg. Visit through the week or on Saturday, since Sunday is reserved for church and family, and the Amish-owned businesses will be closed.  If you do find yourself
visiting on Sunday you will see the Amish traveling
the countryside to church.

On my recent visit I toured Berlin Hotel and Suites.  This beautiful and immaculate property is located one mile west of Berlin. The grounds are beautifully groomed with a rustic walking path and a newly built gazebo nestled alongside a scenic pond with two
illuminated waterfalls.  Berlin Hotel and Suites is unique in the amenities it offers; guests have access
to a 17,000 square foot fitness facility, indoor pool
and sauna, racquetball room, 26-seat private movie theater and amazing suites with fireplaces and flat screen televisions.

Another great thing to do in Amish Country is eat! Located next to Berlin Hotel and Suites is the Berlin Hickory Smokehouse, where the Amish dine on Friday nights to enjoy the restaurant’s specialty – smoked meats.  Ohio’s Amish Country also makes world-renowned cheese.  A good place to try some of this
is Heiney’s Market in Berlin, where samples of cheese and other goodies are available for you.

One last tip to enhance your visit: look for AAA’s Show Your Card & Save® partners located throughout Amish Country to take advantage of AAA member exclusive savings and discounts! See the list below for details.
