A Technicolor Musical

India’s film industry known as Bollywood is larger in terms of output than Hollywood by far.  In recent years, Bollywood has started to become a global phenomenon, especially since most of its product is large, bawdy, spectacular musical cinema that is obsessed with love stories.

That phenomenon is now captured in an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical extravaganza - Bombay Dreams.

The touring production of the musical is coming to Columbus as part of the Broadway in America series.  Allison Thomas, director of public relations with the Broadway Series, feels the show fits perfectly into the current season, because of jovial atmosphere that it brings.  “The show is also a bit different and new, because of the new culture it brings to the stage and our audiences,” says Thomas.  “We like to have nice, solid, diverse programming and Bombay Dreams is it.”

It helps to be somewhat familiar with the Bollywood genre to appreciate this show, but regardless, audiences will latch on to the theater, love-story and spectacle of this performance.  In addition, the sets, costumes, lighting and special effects in the show are vintage Andrew Lloyd Webber – large, brash, and awesome.

While Thomas is confident that traditional Broadway audiences will flock to the show, she hopes those not normally inclined to attend will take a chance. “Bombay Dreams is a great introduction to musical theater, because it is so accessible, and it will resonate with younger folk, particularly in terms of the music.”
