Once a month, C Magazine interviews a prominent Columbus figure to discuss why he or she wakes up in the morning. This month, we chatted with Kevin Lee, general manager of the Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Columbus brewery.
Exactly how much beer does your brewery make in a day?
We make a half a million cases of beer each day, all made in-house.
Was the Bud Select formula really created and mastered at the Columbus plant?
It really was. I can remember sitting with our brew master and August Busch III as they hammered down and reviewed the specifics around that formula.
How many people does AB employ in Columbus?
Why do sports and beer go so well together?
Because they’re both about the same things. Making a great beer like Budweiser and winning something like a championship is really about hard work, discipline and knowing how to do it better than the competition.
What’s the deathblow to any beer recipe?
Too much hops.
What’s the most dangerous thing you’ve ever done?
You mean other than when I worked as an engineer on exploration oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico or as a captain in the U.S. Army? (laughs)
Any mistakes you’d like to right?
I’m not a rearview-looking guy, and never have been a second guesser, but I regret not spending more time "smelling the roses."
If you could have a drink with anyone, whom would you choose and what would you be drinking?
My mother passed away when I was five. And though I’d really enjoy a beer with George Patton while talking about his views on leadership and the Second World War, my mother would be the person I’d want to meet and be with for a day. I’d drink anything to that.
What is something Columbus needs more than it might admit?
A National Hockey League Stanley Cup. (laughs)
What do you truly hate?
People that don’t want to help others.
What is one treat in Columbus you can’t say no to?
A Thurman burger, accompanied by a cold bottle of Bud, of course.
